CBD products inundate the market and creates a ton of mixed information. There is a lot that goes on between seed to sale. So, it is important to know where your products come from. Which is why extraction is a critical aspect of producing CBD.
Extraction Process 101:
A variety of extraction process techniques separate the components of cannabis and remove them from the plant. These varying methods divide the cannabis plant material into extracts that contain different chemicals. Cannabis contains at least 113 cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The most common extraction practice to effectively extract CBD from hemp is to use ethanol, isopropanol, alkanes, CO2, or water, either separately or as a mixture.
What’s the most common technique for extracting CBD from hemp plants? When solvents are mixed with the biomass, it efficiently helps extract the cannabinoids from the plant material. It also helps purify the solution beyond the crude oil state. So, when the solvent ultimately evaporates, it leaves behind only CBD oil.
METHODS OF EXTRACTION –
CO2 Cannabis Extraction:
Instead of using alcohol (a solvent), the CO2 (supercritical carbon dioxide) extraction method removes cannabis components from the plant with carbon dioxide. The CO2 extraction process remains a safe, efficient process to produce a potent extract. However, it’s important to note, the process isn’t always alcohol free. Material extracted with CO2, become further refined with an alcohol solvent to create CBD isolate or distillate.
Butane or Propane Extraction Process:
Using butane as the extraction solvent creates butane hash oil. To do this, the process starts with cannabis and liquid butane in a pressurized and heated system. By using evaporation under a vacuum, it is then possible to remove the butane solvent. The vacuum turns the butane from liquid to a vapor, making the solvent easier to remove.
Alcohol Extraction Process:
Several common forms of cannabis extraction rely on a solvent, such as alcohol, which is the method Cali-Born Dreams utilizes. Extracting with alcohol In brief, the cannabis soaks in alcohol, the plant material is then removed, the liquid filtered, and the alcohol is removed with some form of evaporation. One of the biggest challenges is the inherent polarity of solvents like ethanol—meaning it has a propensity to mix with water and dissolve molecules like chlorophyll. Removing Chlorophyll from the extract is important as it produces an undesirable, bitter flavor. IPA Extraction
Cali-Born Dreams always encourages you to educate yourself on how the products you use are manufactured. Make sure the manufacturing facility is GMP Certified (Good Manufacturing Practices). Ask if it is ISO 9001 Certified, which is the international standard for a Quality Management System QMS. This standard is used
by organizations to demonstrate their ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements and to demonstrate continuous improvement. Solvent Quality. Do they test every batch of product before release?
Superior Quality:
For years, Cali-Born Dreams has ensured its products are stringently tested at less than limit quantification, or at non-detectable levels of residual solvents. We always supply our customers with up to date COAs (Certificate of Analysis), to bring you further comfort in your choice of CBD product COA. Cali-Born Dreams will continue to supply you with the most refined, superior quality product available.
